Flying North for summer

April 2001
Bert Speelpenning

I have just realized that my entire life I've lived in a world where birds fly South for the winter.  Growing up in Holland, living in Seattle, this is a world that has made sense to me: I can see why birds would want to get the heck out for winter.

The world I am living in starting now is a world in which birds fly North for summer.  It is a completely different world.  It is a world where birds come to be where we live for their summer vacation.  They come because food is plentiful, nesting opportunities abound, and that's where they want to raise their young.
